Update on This Morning’s Power Outage in Innisfil: Wildlife Contact Identified as Cause
This morning, InnPower experienced an unexpected outage that affected approximately 8,500 customers across Innisfil. Our team moved quickly to identify the source of the interruption and restore service as safely and efficiently as possible.
We’ve now confirmed that the outage was caused by wildlife contact—specifically, an osprey attempting to build a nest on a key supply circuit feeding the area. While ospreys are a protected species known to return to the same nesting locations each year, their interaction with critical infrastructure can pose risks to both public safety and the birds themselves.
Protecting Our Community & Our Environment
At InnPower, we recognize the vital importance of both environmental stewardship and reliable electricity service. That’s why we’ve invested in continuous monitoring systems and proactive mitigation measures designed to prevent incidents like this.
Our crews routinely inspect and maintain our system to minimize disruption from weather-related or wildlife-related events. When patterns of activity—such as seasonal nesting—are detected, we work closely with environmental and wildlife agencies to install deterrents or relocate nests safely, in accordance with all regulations.
Planning for the Unexpected
Although this event was out of our control, it serves as an important reminder of the value of emergency preparedness for all customers. We encourage households and businesses to:
- Keep a battery-powered flashlight and extra batteries on hand
- Charge essential devices in advance of incoming weather systems
- Unplug sensitive electronics during outages to avoid surges
- Update contact preferences in your InnPower account to receive alerts and restoration updates
