Help Kids Play Safe This Summer

Electricity can be very hazardous! It's important to keep kids safe by teaching them the importance of electrical safety. Below you will find some tips on how you can keep your children safe around electricity while playing outside this summer!

Trees and Power lines

Climbing trees near power lines is a major hazard! Help children find safe places to play, away from utility poles and powerlines. Remind children to never climb trees near powerlines. Make sure they look closely, since leaves and branches can hide the wires and cause shock very easily.

Cord Maintenance Checks

Check all your electrical cords regularly, replacing any damaged or frayed cords to eliminate potential fire or electrical hazards. Ensure they are stored in a safe place, away from water. Do not leave cords laying on the ground or in walking paths to avoid tripping hazards.

Outdoor Activities and Electrical Equipment

When playing outside, avoid flying kites, throwing balls, frisbees or any other activities near powerlines. Be cautious of any green electrical boxes or hydro poles that may be nearby. Never attempt to retrieve anything near or stuck in electrical equipment or infrastructure. Remember to look up, look around, and look out for electrical equipment!

Water and Electricity

Teach children that it is unsafe to swim during a storm or if there is a storm brewing. Encourage children to take shelter and stay inside until skies are clear to avoid receiving electric shock. Make sure all electrical equipment is kept away from water. Many summer activities can happen on or near water but remember: water and electricity are a lethal mix!
