Storm Season Is Here: Be Prepared Before the Power Goes Out
Summer storms can arrive quickly and sometimes without much warning. High winds, heavy rain, and lightning can cause power outages, damaged equipment, and safety hazards across our service area.
At InnPower, our crews are ready to respond — but there are steps customers can take now to be prepared before an outage happens.
Before an Outage
Preparation can make all the difference. We recommend:
- Building an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, bottled water, and non-perishable food
- Charging phones, power banks, and essential devices ahead of storms
- Knowing where your electrical panel is and how to safely reset a breaker if needed
- Keeping important phone numbers accessible
- Planning ahead if someone in your home relies on electrically powered medical equipment
During an Outage
If the power goes out:
- Check if your neighbours are also without power
- Report your outage if it hasn’t already been reported
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible
- Unplug sensitive electronics to protect against power surges
- Use flashlights instead of candles whenever possible
Stay Safe Around Downed Powerlines
Always assume downed powerlines are live.
Stay at least 10 metres back — about the length of a school bus — and call 911 immediately.
Never touch or attempt to move wires, trees, or objects that may be in contact with powerlines.
