5 Ways to Save Energy
Beat the heat this Summer! With rising costs and growing awareness around environmental responsibility, many people are looking for simple ways to reduce their energy use without giving up comfort. Now, there are more options than ever to save energy easily and affordably.
Here are five practical and modern ways to reduce your energy usage:
Make the Switch to LEDs

Swapping out old incandescent bulbs for LEDs is one of the fastest, easiest ways to cut down your electricity bill. LEDs use 70 – 90% less energy and last much longer — some up to 10 years!
Want to take it a step further? Many LED bulbs now come in “smart” versions that let you control them with your phone via app or voice control, helping you turn the lights off even when you forget!
Tip: Start where it counts! Replace bulbs in the most frequently used rooms first —like the kitchen, living room, or your porch.
Unplug Idle Electronics
Even when turned off, many electronics and appliances still draw power — this is called phantom power or vampire energy, and it can account for 5 – 10% of your electricity bill.
Top Electronic Offenders: TVs, game consoles, coffee makers, desktop computers, and chargers.
Unplug devices you rarely use and use a power bar for groups of devices — then switch it off at night or when you leave the house.
Adjust Your Thermostat
Heating and cooling are still the biggest energy users in most homes. Even if you don’t have a smart thermostat — there are always ways to save!
- Raise your thermostat by 2-3 degrees in the summer (or lower it in the winter).
- Use ceiling fans to circulate the air and help make you feel cooler.
- Close curtains or blinds during the day to block the heat from sunlight.
- Open windows at night to let cool air in.
Before heading out for the day or weekend away, adjust your thermostat to avoid cooling or heating an empty home.
Find & Fix Leaks
Even the tiniest drafts can make your hard-earned cool air escape. Sealing up leaks is a low-cost, high-impact way to make your home more efficient and comfortable.
What you can do:

- Use weatherstripping or draft stoppers on doors
- Apply caulk to window frames with noticeable gaps
- Add insulation to outlets on exterior walls
- Use door sweeps to block heat or cold from sneaking in
Tip: Do a walkthrough on a windy day—to feel where the air is leaking in or out of your home.
Run Full Loads
Your dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer all use significant energy, especially when run inefficiently. Simple changes in how and when you use them can cut costs easily.
- Only run full loads
- Air-dry dishes and clothes instead of using the heat cycle and dryer
- Wash clothes in cold water
- Clean lint traps before every dryer load
- Avoid peak energy hours when possible (often late afternoon to early evening)
