Outages and Safety

Unplanned Outage February 26, 2020

Feb 26, 2020
12:30 pm - 2:30 pm
An unplanned outage occurred on February 26, 2020 at approximately 12:30 pm affecting a large number of customers. The reason for the outage was a propane truck had taken out a hydro pole on a main 44 KV feeder outside of InnPower's service territory that feeds InnPower customers. Hydro One notified InnPower that the feeder was locked out and asked if they can close it in. Per InnPower's policy, a waiting period of 10 minutes is required to determine if any police or fire emergency calls are received and to determine if any crews are working in the affected areas.

After the waiting period, both InnPower and Hydro One crews began patrolling their respective infrastructure to determine the cause.

Patrolling is a necessity to ensure safety for people and equipment before closing in switches and restoring power. This can take some time to get crews to the affected area and then patrol all of the lines to ensure there are no faults present.

The cause was discovered at 1:33 pm reported by Hydro One. At that time InnPower staff had finished patrolling and could safely switch the affected customers to an alternate feeder.

A switching order was engineered and executed at approximately 2:36 pm to restore power to all affected InnPower customers until Hydro One can make repairs at which time we will transfer load back to the repaired feeder.
